About residence status
Permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted
In order to enter Japan, you must first be issued a visa. In addition, the status of residence is determined by the activities that foreigners conduct in Japan, as well as their status and status. Professional courses at Japanese universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, and vocational schools are “studying abroad” and are intended for receiving education at Japanese schools, and are not permitted to work. However, you can work part-time after completing the application procedure for “permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” at the Regional Immigration Bureau. New entrants with a residence status of “Student” whose period of stay is set to exceed 3 months can apply for a “permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” at the immigration counter at the airport upon receiving landing permission. After arriving in Japan, those who have registered as residents at the municipal office and received the certificate by mail will apply for permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted at the Regional Immigration Bureau.
Application for renewal of residence status
If you wish to continue to stay beyond the expiration date of your period of stay determined at the time of entry, you can apply for permission to extend your period of stay from three months before the expiration date unless you apply for permission to extend your period of stay at the Regional Immigration Bureau. If you stay beyond the expiration date of your period of stay, you will be considered an illegal stay and will be subject to punishment or deportation.
Change of residence status
If you wish to quit your current activity (studying abroad) and start an activity (employment, etc.) that falls under a different status of residence, you must apply for a change of status of residence and permission at the Regional Immigration Bureau. *When changing an international student’s status of residence, certain conditions must be met and a certificate of expected graduation must be submitted.
Cancellation of status of residence
A person who is engaged in activities with the residence status of an international student engages in part-time work (limited days, working hours, etc.) that exceeds the restrictions for activities other than that permitted under the status of residence, falsifies his or her activity history, or declares or submits forged documents. In this case, your status of residence will be revoked.

Please apply. If your current place of residence has changed or if you are returning to your home country after studying abroad, please submit a notification at the municipal office.
